Thank you to all of our members, volunteers and visitors who recently took our survey about potential name ideas for the Senior Center. We have been listening to your feedback and are reading every idea and suggestion. We want you to know that we value and respect each of your opinions. Some of you asked, “Why are you changing your name?” Great question!
We are one of the hundreds of senior centers across the country that is exploring changing or have changed names. That’s because a lot of folks over the age of 50 don’t identify as a “senior” and don’t see themselves ever going to a “senior center.” We know that some people love the name “senior center” (we love you, too!)—and we know that others simply don’t.
As part of our long-term strategic plan, our board and staff leadership want to make sure that everyone in our community feels welcome and included in our building and in our programs. Our goal is to listen and anticipate the future needs of West Seattle residents years and even decades down the road and be well-positioned to support the physical, mental and emotional health of our community members as they age. One thing that will not change is our broad, engaging and fun programming. In fact, we plan to continue to add events, classes and activities based on what you tell us you want and need.
Stay tuned! We hope you like—or can graciously accept—what we land on.
